CARPAL TUNNEL REHABILITATION EXERCISES

Carpal tunnel rehabilitation exercises reduce pressure at the median nerve of the wrist, so it can move more freely within the carpal tunnel. You may begin these exercises right away to relieve your discomfort, but feel free to contact our specialist if you’re feeling too much pain.

Range of Motion Exercise

Range of motion exercises can help to heal and strengthen your wrist. There are basically three types of  range of motion exercises; flexion, extension, and side-to-side exercises.

Flexion: This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles of the outer forearm. To do this exercise, try to extend one of your arms in front of the body at your shoulder height. Try your best not to lock your elbow while stretching your arm out.

flexion, extension, and side-to-side range of motion exercises

Now position your palm facing down and bend your wrist so that the fingers are pointed towards the floor.  Now put the bent hand towards the body with the other hand so you can feel a stretch in the outer forearm. Hold for 15 seconds. Then release and repeat five times. Repeat the same exercise for the other arm and repeat the sequence per day, 5 to 7 days a week.

Extension: The extension exercise helps to strengthen the muscles of the inner forearm. Position one arm straight out in front of the body and keep it at the shoulder height. Remember not to lock the elbow when stretching your arm out. Then, bend the wrist back as if you’re trying to make a stop sign with your hand.

Now use the other hand to gently pull the palm back towards the body so you can feel a stretch in your inner forearm. Hold your hands in this position for about 15 seconds. Then release and repeat 5 times and repeat the same procedure on the other arm. Repeat the sequence per day, 5 to 7 days a week.

Side-to-side: Gently move your wrist from side-to-side as if you were having a handshake. Try to hold for 5 seconds at each end and do 3 sets of 10.

Wrist Stretch

You may also try a wrist stretch if your pain persists after a wrist range of motion exercise. Start by using one hand to bend the opposite wrist by pressing the back of your hand and holding it down for about 15 to 30 seconds. Now press the fingers in a backward direction to stretch the hand and hold it in this position for between 15 to 30 seconds. Try to keep your elbow straight during this exercise and do 3 sets of 10.

Tendon Glide

You can start a tendon glide by holding out the fingers of your hands in a straight position. Now bend the middle joints of your finger gently toward your upper palm. Keep it there for 5 seconds. Do 3 sets of 10.

scapular squeeze exercise

Scapular Squeeze

You can do the scapular squeeze exercise while sitting or standing. While in either of the two positions, keep your hands by your sides and gently squeeze your shoulder blades together and hold for 5 seconds. Do 3 sets of 10.

Wrist Extension

This exercise can either be performed with a soup can or hammer handle. Hold either a soup can or hammer handle with your palm facing down and slowly bend your wrist upward. Now slowly lower either the soup can or hammer handle down into the original position. Do 3 sets of 10. To get the best out of this exercise, gradually increase the weight of the object you’re holding.

Our office is conveniently located in the Arboretum Office Park at the intersection of Pineville Matthews Road and Providence Road, less than a mile from the Providence Road Exit off of 485. The Arboretum Office Park is located across Providence Road from the main section of the Arboretum. Our actual address is 8035 Providence Road Suite 340, Charlotte, NC 28277

ARE YOU AFFILIATED WITH A HOSPITAL?

Advanced Sports & Spine is a private practice, not annexed to or owned by a hospital facility. We are a non-facility fee office. Therefore, our patients pay less compared to having the procedure performed at a hospital.

IF I DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? DO YOU ACCEPT CASH? DO YOU FINANCE?

The cost depends on 2 main factors: how severe your condition is and how many joints or areas of the body you are looking to have treated. Dr. Ahmad and his team will be able to answer this question for you more thoroughly after your initial examination and review of diagnostic findings.

Yes, we do accept cash. We also have the most competitive pricing in the Carolinas with many different financing options, such as Care Credit and Advance Care, offering low monthly payments and interest free options for up to 14 months.

IF I RECEIVE AN INJECTION DO I NEED A DRIVER?

For joint injections, a driver is not needed. For spinal and PRP injections, a driver is recommended.

HOW LONG WILL THE INJECTION TAKE?

Steroid injections can take up to 5 days before they start working.

HOW LONG BEFORE I START FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE INJECTION?

Steroid injections can take up to 5 days before they start working. Average relief is up to 3 months, but that does not mean it will not last that long or that it could last even longer.

For ESI and Facet injections, relief is up to 3 months, but that does not mean it will not last that long or it could even last longer. MBB only lasts 1 day and determines if you are a candidate for RFE. You return the next day with a pain diary. RFA procedures can last 6 months to a year.

WHAT MEDICATION IS USED FOR THE INJECTION? WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Joint injections contain a steroid and anesthetic. Whenever you break the skin, there is a possibility of bleeding and infection. However, those risks are minimized because image guidance is used. If you have Diabetes, the injection can increase sugar levels for up to 3-4 days. Steroids given close to the skin can cause discoloration or dimpling.

At Advanced Sports & Spine, the majority of our pain management procedures are performed in our Charlotte office. We use state-of-the-art equipment. Our ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance techniques ensure accuracy, help limit complications, and increase success rates.
