Median Nerve Hydrodissection

Your health is our top priority!

Median Nerve Hydrodissection For Wrist Pain in Charlotte

A median nerve hydrodissection is a non-surgical, non-opioid procedure that treats carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). It uses both saline solution and a numbing agent to treat pain and inflammation caused by a compressed median nerve in the wrist. Though its name sounds complicated, it is a simple medical procedure that strategically injects a medication to relieve peripheral nerve entrapment in the wrist.

Entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve in the wrist may affect the function and mobility of the fingers, hand, and arm of a patient. Nerve hydrodissection for carpal tunnel syndrome not only relieves wrist pain but also helps set the compressed nerve free. The saline solution serves as a pressure absorber or cushion between the median nerve and the surrounding muscle, nerve, or other parts of the wrist.

Aside from activities that cause chronic stress and pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, certain health conditions may also put you at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Hypothyroidism

Nerve hydrodissection is a minor medical procedure that treats other nerve disorders or entrapment neuropathies in the shoulder or elbow. Median nerve hydrodissection focuses on decompressing the nerve in the wrist called the median nerve to relieve pain and inflammation. It is also a procedure that works with other treatments like physical therapy to improve patient mobility.

A median nerve hydrodissection is an ultrasound-guided injection done in an outpatient setting. You lie down next to an ultrasound machine as your doctor uses ultrasound guidance to locate the area where your median nerve is compressed. A numbing agent is injected into your skin before placing the saline solution and numbing agent.

In some cases, doctors may also inject a steroid medication in the area to help control the wrist pain and inflammation. Sudden and significant pain relief can immediately take effect after the treatment. Your wrist may need to rest after the treatment, but you may return to your normal activities after a day or two.

The overall duration of the median nerve hydrodissection procedure is around 30 to 45 minutes. You may go home on the same day of the treatment. Due to its positive effect on patients, median nerve hydrodissection is often part of a holistic treatment plan for CTS, along with physical therapy.

The benefits of nerve hydrodissection for patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome are as follows:

  • Non-surgical treatment which reduces risks of infection
  • Faster recovery period
  • Immediate pain relief
  • Same-day treatment
  • Few to no lasting side-effects
  • No scarring
  • A way to make physical therapy more convenient and less painful

ARE YOU AFFILIATED WITH A HOSPITAL?

IF I DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? DO YOU ACCEPT CASH? DO YOU FINANCE?

The cost depends on 2 main factors: how severe your condition is and how many joints or areas of the body you are looking to have treated. Dr. Ahmad and his team will be able to answer this question for you more thoroughly after your initial examination and review of diagnostic findings.

Yes, we do accept cash. We also have the most competitive pricing in the Carolinas with many different financing options, such as Care Credit and Advance Care, offering low monthly payments and interest free options for up to 14 months.

IF I RECEIVE AN INJECTION DO I NEED A DRIVER?

For joint injections, a driver is not needed. For spinal and PRP injections, a driver is recommended.

HOW LONG WILL THE INJECTION TAKE?

Steroid injections can take up to 5 days before they start working.

HOW LONG BEFORE I START FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE INJECTION?

Steroid injections can take up to 5 days before they start working. Average relief is up to 3 months, but that does not mean it will not last that long or that it could last even longer.

For ESI and Facet injections, relief is up to 3 months, but that does not mean it will not last that long or it could even last longer. MBB only lasts 1 day and determines if you are a candidate for RFE. You return the next day with a pain diary. RFA procedures can last 6 months to a year.

WHAT MEDICATION IS USED FOR THE INJECTION? WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Joint injections contain a steroid and anesthetic. Whenever you break the skin, there is a possibility of bleeding and infection. However, those risks are minimized because image guidance is used. If you have Diabetes, the injection can increase sugar levels for up to 3-4 days. Steroids given close to the skin can cause discoloration or dimpling.

WHERE ARE THE INJECTIONS PERFORMED? DO I GO TO A SURGERY CENTER?

At Advanced Sports & Spine, the majority of our pain management procedures are performed in our Charlotte office. We use state-of-the-art equipment. Our ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance techniques ensure accuracy, help limit complications, and increase success rates.
